Frequently Asked Questions

Sunrise over the Wheat Field

Initial steps?

You can contact us by completing this form or by calling 319.481.1203. After you reach out we will schedule a free 30 minute phone consultation. This will allow us to better understand your needs and to establish if we are a good fit for you. From there we will schedule an intake.

What to expect during the intake process?

Intake paperwork will be completed prior to your initial session. The intake consists of two 60 minute sessions. These sessions focus on your current needs and experiences as well as your goals for treatment. They will also allow us to get to know you and your history to help inform the treatment. From there your therapist will share an initial understanding of your difficulties (formulation) and treatment plan.

What to expect from the therapy process?

Therapy typically involves weekly sessions, although this varies depending upon need. Consistency at the start of therapy is important but it is common for sessions to become less frequent as you feel more able to manage your experiences on your own. The goal is for you to become your own therapist!

Therapy is an evolving and collaborative process between you and your therapist. What you do between sessions is as important as what you do within sessions. Your therapist will often introduce and explore new ways of thinking and behaving in session, which you will then experiment with between sessions. Your feedback about this will then inform your next session, and so on! Over time the aim is to build up a wide repertoire of tools and techniques to understand and manage challenging experiences.

How long will I be in therapy?

Length of therapy varies depending upon need. Some clients find that 4-6 sessions is enough to help them build new ways of responding to their challenges. Other clients find longer-term sessions are helpful to continue to manage ongoing experiences. We will always collaborate with you about length of treatment and discuss whether you are continuing to benefit from therapy.

Do you offer supportive therapy?

Yes, a supportive and explorative relationship is always central to our therapy. You will be provided space to discuss current and past experiences as needed.  For many people this is helpful in and of itself, but it also allows us to better understand your needs and guide treatment.
